Miracle #1 for Q1 2024: Holly Bowling

I was lucky enough to be invited to watch a private performance by one of my musical heroes, Holly Bowling. She recorded a solo piano performance of four Grateful Dead songs at the International House where my wife works. I wanted to find a way to be useful, so I brought my equipment to video capture the performance.

During setup, we learned that the stage lights emitted a hum that the mics easily picked up, so we had to kill them, which nullified my attempt to video capture. Cristina and Tim rallied with me, and we shlepped some floor lamps from a different room to the stage to provide some basic illumination. This rendered all my long shots of the stage to be worthless but enabled my close-up shots.

Holly’s hour-long performance was transcendent. It was like medicine to me as I sat on the floor in the empty Auditorium, holding hands with my wife.

I’m glad that my capture turned out as well as it did.
